Digital Declutter: Day of the Year Photo Decluttering Technique
These days with cameras in our phones, it’s so easy to take 100 pictures of the same thing. It’s also easier than ever to take good photos. The size of photos is increasing as well which leads us to a modern day problem of how do we manage photo storage and decluttering of photographs.
If you wanted to add old ones to the mix, you can scan and then update the meta data to the date the photo was taken if you know it. Meta data is accessible to Windows for free. I haven’t found the same equivalent in Mac but there probably is one.
In order to declutter my photos, I like to use the Day of the Year technique in which in the search bar in your photos app you type the day, without the year, such as “March 31” and all photos from all years taken on March 31st will show up. This narrows how many you are dealing with to a manageable number.
It’s also very easy to catch up days. This technique helps us star favorites, delete duplicates, and photos that are no longer relevant.
STEP 1: Type today's day and month (i.e. "March 30")

STEP 2: Review photos for any that are duplicates or irrelevant

STEP 3: Send to trash

You’ve officially decluttered today’s photos! You can alternately opt to star them as favorites or move to a folder if you wish.
The best part is that by the end of the year you will have decluttered all the photos that were in your app! It’s a simple but powerful digital decluttering tool.
I will often archive business photos outside of the app in order to save space for new photos. I typically have used the business photos for social media and have those available elsewhere so we can keep the cloud storage functional.
